I’m doing this because this is one of my all-time favorite game soundtracks, but finding it in mp3 was very hard. The best offering I could find is on starmen.net in the OGG format, which many popular music players (iTunes, spotify) don’t support. Outside of there, all the other mp3 copies I could find were of poor quality, or had since vanished. So I took the time to convert starmen’s OGGs to mp3 and re-upload it myself. The files’ track number information is messed up, but it’s otherwise the best available version of the soundtrack I know of.
Nintendo has released official albums in the form of Mother 3i and Mother 3+, both of which are wonderful and worth supporting. But they only scratch the surface of all the music buried in this beautiful game, and they took care to clean up the sound whereas I prefer the remember the music as I heard it from my game boy. There’s 250 songs here, 6 hours which they somehow fit into a gameboy advance cart–and it is all worth listening to.
I love so much about this music, its melodies, its dense use of leitmotif, the vivid imagery it casts, its willingness to score even the smallest moments in the game… If you’ve never played the game or heard the music, maybe now’s the time. Here are some recommended tracks, if you’re trying to sample what there is here. I put an asterisk (*) next to the ones which I suspect are more personal choices/lesser known.
I’m sure anyone else familiar with the OST would have a lot of additions + cuts they’d make on this list. There’s just so much here, which speaks very personally to so many different people, you can’t really make an honest or complete “best of” list (which is why I felt unsatisfied by the official releases). Listen for yourself and discover your own favorites 🙂

I took some more time on my little free game, Goo Goo, and made it bigger + better and launched it on Steam. Because… well, why not?? It’s a fun game and I’m proud of it and proud of how much I was able to get done with it in about two weeks. So hey: check it out!

For a few days, you’ll be able to get Perfection., Phantasmaburbia, and Sling It for whatever price you name. 40% of the total sales (50% of my cut) goes toward homelessness in my home town (we have a bunch). If you want to help a cool cause while collecting basically my entire commercial library for any price, then, this might just be the time to do it!

We’re really excited to announce that Coin Crypt is now available on Steam Early Access! The game’s grown quite a bit since we started talking about it, and now we feel it’s ready to transition into a paid beta. Steam early access gives us an easy avenue through which we can interact with players and get feedback as we build on the game more.
Just a heads up: on Halloween day, October 31, at 12pm EST, I’m going to livestream a developer commentary playthrough of Phantasmaburbia. I’m not expecting a huge turnout or anything, but, I think I’ll appreciate having the recording, and also the experience of playing through the game again. I’m a bit nervous, having left it mostly unexamined since it came out almost one year ago.
Also, sorry this has been my only post in so long! I’ve been oppressively busy working on a number of things which I can’t really share, yet. Least of which is Coin Crypt, unfortunately, though I’ve pittered a bit on the dev blog for that game in the meantime if you haven’t seen that. I suppose with what success Perfection has had, I definitely haven’t felt nearly as rushed to produce something to the public again. And I think, for now, that is a good thing for me, because I’m really enjoying the things I’m working on. Just know that there is more coming. Always.
Last night, my game Perfection took a Philly Geek Award for Indie Game of the Year, 2013. That’s pretty cool. As someone who grew up and is frequently influenced by the Philadelphia area, it feels pretty special to get recognition back from that community! 🙂
Perfection. is sort of technically interesting, since it has randomly-generated puzzles. For those who may be unfamiliar, the puzzles take the form of polygons you can cut in straight lines and a shape you’re trying to match the polygon to.
I’ve had lots of people ask me about what goes on under the hood, enough that I decided to just make a brief little post about the interesting parts of it. I’m not actually a good programmer (Perfection. was made in Game Maker, y’know) but I’m hoping some of the techniques here are informative to others or inspire some interesting game designs! Back in the day, I’d keep a pretty active blog or forum topic and get lots of people involved in the process, and I kind of miss doing that. Call this a return to form! There’s still plenty to do with it, but I really wanted to open up the floor a bit and get feedback and ideas from people about stuff they’d like to see in the game, etc. The basic mechanics of the game provide what I think is a pretty interesting framework with lots of room to expand. So give it a try, and please leave your thoughts here or at one of the places linked on the site 🙂
With the release of the new update, Perfection. was put on the front page of the iTunes app store, as a “New and Noteworthy.” It’ll be there for a few more days. This is super exciting, and has done a lot for the revenue of the game. This is my first self-published title that’s actually turned a profit, so… smiles all around! I might just be able to keep on doing this. 🙂
Today I rolled out/am rolling out a new version of Perfection on the App Store and Google Play, as well as launching it on the first time on the Mac App Store! The update has relatively minor changes, especially to those who have played already; the game starts up with a much more clear tutorial, runs smoother, and the solution detection is a lot better now.
HOWEVER, the iOS App Store update currently has a bug which makes the tutorial restart each time you re-open the app. A fix for that is on its way through certification, so if you want to wait for that to do the update, that’s cool. Ultimately I don’t see this as too major of a problem since you can blast through the tutorial in seconds anyway once you know how to play, but, it is definitely annoying.
And I’ll work on getting the new version out through the Humble Store and Desura next.
