Greg "Banov" Lobanov indie game designer extraordinaire Sun, 11 Dec 2016 22:57:29 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Mother 3 Soundtrack Wed, 06 Apr 2016 21:44:27 +0000 An unusual post for my site, but I wanted to share these files of the Mother 3 soundrack, all 250 songs ripped from the game in good quality mp3. All the music is credited to Shogo Sakai.

I’m doing this because this is one of my all-time favorite game soundtracks, but finding it in mp3 was very hard. The best offering I could find is on in the OGG format, which many popular music players (iTunes, spotify) don’t support. Outside of there, all the other mp3 copies I could find were of poor quality, or had since vanished. So I took the time to convert starmen’s OGGs to mp3 and re-upload it myself. The files’ track number information is messed up, but it’s otherwise the best available version of the soundtrack I know of.

Nintendo has released official albums in the form of Mother 3i and Mother 3+, both of which are wonderful and worth supporting. But they only scratch the surface of all the music buried in this beautiful game, and they took care to clean up the sound whereas I prefer the remember the music as I heard it from my game boy. There’s 250 songs here, 6 hours which they somehow fit into a gameboy advance cart–and it is all worth listening to.

I love so much about this music, its melodies, its dense use of leitmotif, the vivid imagery it casts, its willingness to score even the smallest moments in the game… If you’ve never played the game or heard the music, maybe now’s the time. Here are some recommended tracks, if you’re trying to sample what there is here. I put an asterisk (*) next to the ones which I suspect are more personal choices/lesser known.

  • 005 – Alec’s Log House*
  • 033 – Gentle Rain
  • 045 – MOTHER 3 Love Theme (staple song)
  • 058 – Magypsy Party
  • 070 – Mind of a Thief
  • 088 – Misplaced Revenge (staple song)
  • 098 – Open Sesame Tofu!
  • 109 – Monkey’s Delivery Service (a whimsical tune for one of the game’s most heartbreaking moments)
  • 123 – Hotel Yado*
  • 140 – Intense Guys
  • 158 – Wasteful Anthem
  • 180 – The Green Train’s Fun, Too!*
  • 191 – Mr. Saturn Theme Z
  • 196 – Volcano! Inferno!*
  • 198 – Coffee Break
  • 208 – Like Looking For a Dropped Pickle*
  • 213 – Life’s An Inner Circle Gap* (imo the most interesting rendition of the most prominent leitmotif in the game)
  • 222 – Leder’s Gymnopedie* (It’s gymnopedie no. 1)
  • 226 – Samba de Combo
  • 227 – Hippo*
  • 237 – Time Passage (awesome throwback song)
  • 238 – A Certain Someone’s Memories (awesome throwback song)
  • 242 – Master Porky’s Theme (staple song, climax battle)

I’m sure anyone else familiar with the OST would have a lot of additions + cuts they’d make on this list. There’s just so much here, which speaks very personally to so many different people, you can’t really make an honest or complete “best of” list (which is why I felt unsatisfied by the official releases). Listen for yourself and discover your own favorites 🙂

I Kickstarted an Entire Video Game and Forgot To Post It On My Website Sat, 20 Feb 2016 22:48:39 +0000 It’s called Wandersong, and you can’t back it anymore because it just got funded today!

Still, pretty excited about it!

Things I Said This Year Tue, 27 Oct 2015 21:23:54 +0000 In the last year I’ve had more opportunities to talk about stuff with video games & my life and stuff. I’ve been meaning to share those; here’s a couple!

I did an interview with a local Philadelphia TV station before my bike trip about me and how much I love making video games.

And this is a talk I gave at GDC immediately after my bike trip about living life and being happy.

I can’t bring myself to actually watch myself talk so I’ll just hope that these are good!!

Super Goo Goo! Thu, 16 Apr 2015 19:03:40 +0000
I took some more time on my little free game, Goo Goo, and made it bigger + better and launched it on Steam. Because… well, why not?? It’s a fun game and I’m proud of it and proud of how much I was able to get done with it in about two weeks. So hey: check it out!

New Game: Goo Goo! Tue, 31 Mar 2015 14:48:49 +0000
It’s a small, juicy puzzle adventure and you can get it for $1 on PC, Mac and Android!

I made and published this game from scratch in about a week. The dev time was about 5 days. I’m really proud of it! I made it as part of a game jam at the Philadelphia Game Forge with the theme “profit”–whoever makes the most money off their game wins the game jam. We’ll see how that goes. People familiar with my work will recognize this as a sort of sequel to Crazy Over Goo with some DNA from Escape from the Underworld–something about restrictive deadlines makes me want to go nuts and make open world games I guess.

Anyway, I hope you check it out and have fun with it, cause I sure as hell had fun working on it!

I Biked Across America! Tue, 24 Feb 2015 23:34:50 +0000 4 and a half months ago, I started pedaling with my friends from my apartment in Philadelphia across America. I was pretty clueless and naive but excited to throw myself at this thing that seemed impossible if only to see just how far I could take it.

Since then, I rode over 5000 miles across the USA; down the east coast, through the south, up the west coast. My friends went home but I made many new ones in the meantime and got into all kinds of adventures. Every day was a new place, new people, new challenges. My bike and everything I owned was stolen at one point, and so I continued on a cheap bike from Walmart.

Yesterday I reached my final destination, San Francisco. This adventure is over! 🙂 I have a lot of feelings about this, some of which I’ll talk about next week when I speak at the Game Developers Conference (and should be a video on the Internet soon after). But I wanted to take a moment, in the moment, to say a couple things about it.

One: this wouldn’t have been possible without the deluge of positivity and goodwill I got on a daily basis from friends, family, and even strangers on the road. There were many times that really challenged me and days that seemed like they’d be my last, but I always found refuge in the goodness of strangers or the support of faraway friends. I really want to thank everybody. I feel indebted to the whole universe, and I plan to spend the rest of my life paying it forward with good deeds of my own.

Two: if there’s one thing I want people to take away from my journey, I think I want it to be about just how impossible it seemed when I set off. Biking across America is something that nobody expected out of me, the guy who spent his life up to that point in front of a computer making games. This wasn’t the story of a guy who went and performed at this thing he was born to do; it’s the story of a guy who decided to go and do this thing he was never supposed to do, that nobody thought he could do, and then somehow succeeding through force of will. To me this adventure has been reassuring that the only difference between our wildest ambitions and reality manifest is our willingness to spit in the face of fate and write the story ourselves.

I love you all. Happy Tuesday!

Coin Crypt is Finished! Tue, 28 Oct 2014 18:56:05 +0000

It’s been a fun and exciting year and a half full of learning for me. I’m super proud of the final product, and excited to see it in the hands of more players. 🙂 Here it is on Steam!

Tech Post: Faking 3D in GameMaker Mon, 22 Sep 2014 02:10:59 +0000 I posted a little tech thing on Coin Crypt’s devlog that I thought I’d mention here, too. I’ve been leveraging Game Maker Studio, ostensibly a beginner’s game making tool, for some pretty neat effects and techniques since I started making games. I’m hoping I can share some of that experience and inspire people to experiment more with what Game Maker has to offer… 🙂

My Games are on Sale for Charity Fri, 18 Jul 2014 14:29:23 +0000

For a few days, you’ll be able to get Perfection., Phantasmaburbia, and Sling It for whatever price you name. 40% of the total sales (50% of my cut) goes toward homelessness in my home town (we have a bunch). If you want to help a cool cause while collecting basically my entire commercial library for any price, then, this might just be the time to do it!

Coin Crypt Thoughts: World-building and Accessibility Wed, 09 Apr 2014 20:29:50 +0000 I just did a big blog post on the Coin Crypt tumblr about big changes I’m working on. Embedded in there are thoughts on my history as a designer, and some of my new goals for this game and others in the future. I haven’t done any blogging like this in a while so I thought I’d share it here too. I’m excited!
